Action Required: You have 3 weeks to Save Your Google Places listing

An email from Google has been sent out to local businesses with that sensational email has been going out to businesses – OK, that sensational email has been going to AUSTRALIAN businesses, so don’t worry, United States businesses with Google places listings are NOT in danger of losing their listings.

Its quite interesting given that Google specifically says Google Places and not Google Plus Local listings. That doesn’t mean much probably to most business owners but when you live in the nuanced world of local SEO, it is an interesting distinction.

For instances, Google Places and Google Plus Local are located online in two different places and for months and months Google has indicated that they are trying to combine these two into one. Because let’s face it – its confusing even by Google standards.

That being said, its always a good idea to set your reminder schedule to just check into your listing twice a year – sort of like checking the battery in your smoke detectors.

To just refresh your memory, go to http://www.google.com/local/add/businessCenter‎.

You will be prompted for your google account login user name which is your email and password which is whatever you set up as your password.

This might also be a good time to tweak your password but you will want to make a note of it.

Then just check out your listing. Is the address correct and complete? Are your categories as you expected – believe it or not sometimes they are not correct – Google deals with a lot of data so its to be expected that you must stay diligent especially for listings that bring in business that you don’t pay for.

You may have made a couple of new videos in the course of 6 months to a year so add something – add images if you have photos of new products or a suitable before and after.

Then click the done or submit button – whatever they are calling it today.

And you’re done.
